Do You Really Need 10 Products for Healthy Curly Hair?
If you scroll through social media, it can feel like healthy curls require a whole shelf of products: leave-ins, curl creams, mousses, gels, oils, activators… the list keeps going. And before you know it, taking care of your natural texture starts to feel more complicated than it needs to be.
At Ippodaro Natural Salon, we believe in a simpler approach. As Hair Healers, we’re not here to tell you that your curls need more products. We want to help you understand what your hair actually needs.
Because healthy curls aren’t about following every trend or using 10 different products. It’s about understanding your curl pattern, porosity, texture, and lifestyle, and choosing the right products that work with your hair, not against it.
Sometimes, less really is more.
Why Curly Hair Routines Became So Complicated

Social media has done some amazing things for curly hair. It has helped so many people embrace their natural texture, learn new techniques, and finally feel confident wearing their curls.
But somewhere along the way, curl routines started getting more and more complicated.
One product for moisture. Another for definition. Then a cream, a mousse, a gel, an oil…and suddenly we’re layering product after product because we’ve been told each one is fixing a different problem.
Here’s where it can get confusing: when your curls start feeling heavy, dull, dry, or just aren’t behaving the way they normally do, your first thought might be, “I need another product.”
But sometimes your hair isn’t asking for more, it’s asking for less.
Too much product can create buildup that weighs down your curl pattern and takes away your hair’s natural movement and bounce. Your hair may even feel coated on the outside while still feeling dry underneath.
If this sounds familiar, we recommend booking a detox scalp treatment. This treatment helps remove product buildup from your scalp and hair, giving your curls a fresh start. We’ll also help you better understand your hair type and how to choose and use products in a way that helps prevent future buildup.

That’s why we always come back to understanding your hair first. Before adding another product to your routine, let’s figure out what your curls are actually trying to tell you.

Start With Your Hair, Not Someone Else's Routine

One of the easiest mistakes to make with curly hair is seeing someone’s beautiful results online and thinking, “I need to do exactly what they’re doing.”
But here’s the thing: their hair isn’t your hair.
Two people can have a similar curl pattern and still need completely different routines. Hair density, strand thickness, porosity, previous color or chemical services, lifestyle, and even the climate you live in can change how your curls respond to a product.
And here in Texas, we definitely can’t forget about the humidity!
A heavy curl cream that works beautifully for someone with thick, coarse curls may leave finer curls feeling weighed down, greasy, or flat. On the other hand, a lightweight routine may not give thicker or drier curls enough moisture and support.
That’s why, as Hair Healers, we encourage you to get to know your hair instead of trying to follow someone else’s routine step by step.
Pay attention to how your curls feel. Are they dry? Heavy? Frizzy? Soft but lacking definition? Does your hair absorb water quickly, or does water seem to sit on top?
Your hair is constantly giving you clues. Once you learn how to recognize them, choosing the right products becomes a lot simpler, and you may realize you don’t need nearly as many products as social media has led you to believe.
Curl Pattern Isn't the Whole Story

When learning about curly hair, one of the first things you’ll probably come across is a curl-typing chart, from Type 2 waves to Type 3 curls and Type 4 coils. And while knowing your curl pattern can be helpful, it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
Your curl type tells us what your hair looks like, but it doesn’t necessarily tell us what your hair needs.
For example, two people can both have beautiful 3B curls but need completely different products. One may have fine strands that are easily weighed down by heavy creams and oils, while the other may have thicker, coarser strands that need more moisture and conditioning.
We also want to understand your strand thickness, hair density, porosity, condition of the hair, and lifestyle. These details help us understand how your hair absorbs moisture, how easily it becomes weighed down, and what products will actually support it.
Porosity Matters: High vs. Low

You may know your curl type, but do you know your hair porosity?
Porosity is simply how easily your hair takes in moisture, and how well it holds onto it. Understanding this can help explain why a product your friend loves may leave your curls feeling dry, heavy, or coated.
High-Porosity Hair: “My Hair Soaks Everything Up”
If your hair gets wet very quickly but also seems to dry out just as fast, you may have high-porosity hair.
Think of the outside layer of your hair like tiny shingles. With high-porosity hair, those shingles are more open or uneven, allowing water to enter easily, but moisture can escape easily too.
You may notice:
- Your hair absorbs water and products quickly
- Your curls frequently feel dry or frizzy
- You keep adding product because your hair seems to “drink it up”
- Your ends may feel rough or fragile
- Your hair has been lightened, colored, chemically treated, heat styled, or exposed to environmental stress
High-porosity hair often needs more than just adding moisture. It may benefit from richer conditioning ingredients, plant oils, proteins, and strengthening treatments that help support the hair and keep moisture from escaping so quickly.
Plant oils- Our team loves using the Oway Nuturing drops
Proteins- Our team loves using the OWAY Curly deep mask .This one is great to use as a leave in conditioner as well due to it being lightweight and not filled with silicones or harsh chemicals.
Strenthening Treatments- The OWAY rebuild m + , in salon treatment done by any of our hair healers. BOOK Here . This is inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing what is broken rather than throwing it away, rebuildM+ takes a similar approach to damaged hair. Instead of simply coating the outside of the strand to make hair feel healthier, rebuildM+ is designed to help strengthen and restore depleted hair from within. Its mineralizing technology helps support the hair’s cuticle while replenishing important proteins, minerals, and lipids that can be lost through coloring, lightening, heat styling, and environmental stress. The result? Hair that feels stronger, smoother, more resilient, and better able to resist future breakage. For our guests with high-porosity, chemically treated, or weakened hair, this is where rebuilding the hair can become just as important as adding moisture.
Medium-Porosity Hair: “My Hair Usually Cooperates”
If your hair gets wet fairly easily, holds onto moisture, and responds well to most products without becoming too dry or weighed down, you may have medium-porosity hair.
With medium porosity, the outer layer of the hair allows moisture to enter while still doing a good job of holding onto it. Think of it as the middle ground, not too open and not too resistant.
You may notice:
- Your hair gets wet without much difficulty
- Your curls hold moisture for a reasonable amount of time
- Products absorb without leaving a heavy coating
- Your hair responds well to a simple routine
- Your curls generally feel soft, hydrated, and manageable
Medium-porosity hair usually doesn’t need a complicated routine. A good cleanser, conditioner, and styling product may be all your curls need.
One of our favorite go to is the OWAY Smooth’n Glow Hair Bath is designed to gently cleanse while helping your hair feel smoother, softer, and easier to work with.Rather than leaving the hair feeling overly stripped, it helps smooth the hair fiber and support a more polished, shiny finish while still allowing your hair to have natural movement. It’s a great option for textured, frizz-prone, or harder-to-manage hair that needs a little more smoothness, control, and shine without feeling heavy.
The key is maintaining that balance. Overusing heavy products, protein treatments, chemical services, or heat can change how your hair behaves over time. Pay attention to your curls and adjust your routine when they start giving you signs that something has changed.
Low-Porosity Hair: “Everything Just Sits on My Hair”
If it takes a while for your hair to become completely wet or you feel like products just sit on top of your curls, you may have low-porosity hair.
The outer layer of the hair is more compact, making it harder for water and products to penetrate the strand.
You may notice:
- It takes longer for your hair to become fully saturated in the shower
- Creams and oils tend to sit on top of your hair
- Your curls become weighed down easily
- You experience product buildup quickly
- Your hair may feel coated even though it still needs hydration
With low-porosity hair, more product usually isn’t the answer. Lightweight, water-based products are often a better choice than layering heavy creams, butters, and oils.
Lightweight: OWAY Flux potion and Oway Glossy nectar
This Is Why Porosity Matters
If your curls feel dry, your first instinct may be to add more oil or curl cream. But if those products aren’t right for your porosity, you may simply be creating more buildup without actually solving the problem.
This is where understanding your hair changes everything.
Instead of asking, “What product is everyone using?” start asking, “What does my hair actually need?”
The Curly Hair Basics (Cleanse, Condition, Hydrate/Prep, Style/Hold, Protect)

Taking care of your curls doesn’t have to mean having 10 different products lined up in your bathroom.
A healthy curl routine can actually be pretty simple. Instead of focusing on how many products you’re using, think about what each product is actually doing for your hair.
Here are five basic needs to consider:
-
Cleanse: Start with a gentle cleanser that removes dirt, oils, and product buildup without leaving your hair and scalp feeling overly stripped.
- Favorite go to: Oway frequent use hair bath, Curl state Purifying shampoo , Malibu Un-do-goo, Verb Ghost shampoo, Hairprint Amla Shampoo
-
Condition: Give your curls the moisture and softness they need while making detangling easier and helping reduce unnecessary pulling and breakage.
- Favorite go to: Oway curly co wash
- Hydrate + Prep: Depending on your hair’s porosity and texture, a lightweight leave-in or hydrating product can help prepare your curls for styling. And remember not everyone needs this extra step.
- Style + Hold: This is where you support your natural curl pattern. A gel, mousse, or curl cream can add definition and hold, but you may only need one of these—not all three.
- Protect: Think about what your hair is exposed to every day. Texas sun, humidity, swimming, and heat styling can all affect your curls. The right protective product can help when your lifestyle calls for it.
The biggest takeaway? You may not need a separate product for every step.
One product may serve more than one purpose, and your routine should change based on your curl pattern, porosity, density, lifestyle, and the current condition of your hair.
Signs You May Be Using Too Many Products
Product buildup can happen slowly, especially when we’re layering leave-ins, creams, gels, mousses, and oils between wash days. Eventually, your curls and scalp may start giving you signs that it’s time to simplify your routine or get a deeper cleanse.
Here are a few things to pay attention to:
- Your curls feel heavy, greasy, or sticky. Even after your hair is completely dry, it may still feel coated instead of soft and touchable.
- Your scalp feels itchy or flaky. If you’re noticing buildup returning quickly between washes, your scalp may need a more thorough cleanse.
- Your hair seems to take forever to dry. Layering too many heavy products can leave the hair coated and make your normal drying routine feel much longer.
- Your curls have lost their bounce. Instead of springing back into their natural pattern, they may look stretched, flat, or weighed down as the day goes on.
- You see flakes or residue in your curls. If scrunching your dry hair leaves behind white flakes or a gummy feeling, your styling products may be building up or simply not working well together.
If any of these sound familiar, don’t automatically reach for another product. Your curls may be telling you it’s time to cleanse, reset, and take another look at what you’re using.
Don't Confuse Frizz With Unhealthy Hair

Social media can sometimes make us feel like every flyaway or little bit of frizz means something is wrong with our hair.
But here’s something we want our curly-haired guests to know: frizz is normal.
Curly and textured hair naturally has movement, volume, and individual strands that don’t always fall perfectly into place. Humidity, dryness, your curl pattern, how you styled your hair, and even the weather that day can all affect how much frizz you see.
And here in Texas? A little humidity-induced frizz is sometimes just part of having curls!
Trying to eliminate every single flyaway can lead to layering heavier creams, oils, and gels until your curls feel coated, stiff, or weighed down.
Instead of chasing perfectly frizz-free hair, focus on healthy hair.
Healthy curls can still have a soft halo of frizz. They should have movement, bounce, softness, and feel like your hair, not like they have to stay perfectly in place all day.
Sometimes embracing a little frizz is simply part of embracing your natural texture.
The Truth About Oils

One of the most common misconceptions in curly and textured hair care is that applying more oil automatically means adding more moisture.
Hydration and oil serve two different purposes.
Hair becomes hydrated through water and water-based formulas. Oils, on the other hand, do not provide water to the hair. Depending on the formulation, they can help condition the strand, reduce friction, improve softness and shine, and help slow moisture loss.
This distinction becomes especially important with low-porosity hair. Because the cuticle is naturally more compact, repeatedly applying heavy raw oils or butters can contribute to buildup on the surface of the hair. Over time, the hair may feel coated, heavy, or greasy while still lacking the hydration it needs.
At Ippodaro Natural Salon, our Hair Healers take a more intentional approach. We focus on hydration first, choosing lightweight, water-based and plant-derived formulas based on the hair’s porosity, texture, and condition. When an oil is beneficial, we use it purposefully to help condition, smooth, protect, or support moisture retention.
The goal is not to avoid oils. It is to understand when your hair needs hydration, when it needs conditioning, and when an oil can actually benefit your routine.
Your Scalp Is Part of Your Routine
Healthy hair cannot exist without a healthy foundation. Your scalp is an extension of your skin, complete with its own delicate microbiome and natural oil production.
Piling heavy curl creams, butter, and styling gels directly onto roots clogs follicles, disrupts scalp balance, and can lead to inflammation or hair thinning. Keep styling products focused on mid-lengths and ends, and ensure your scalp receives regular, gentle cleansing to promote optimal growth.
Build a Routine You Can Actually Maintain
The best curl routine is the one you can consistently maintain without feeling exhausted. An elaborate 10-step process that takes three hours every wash day is unsustainable for real-world schedules.
When you invest in targeted organic formulations, fewer products yield significantly better results. Streamlining your routine saves time, reduces financial stress, and allows your hair’s natural beauty to shine through without being smothered.
